Longtime Senator Tom Daschle was born today in 1947 in Aberdeen. Daschle earned a political science degree from South Dakota State University and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978. He upset incumbent Sen. James Abdnor in 1986 and rose to become Democratic leader. Daschle lost his 2004 re-election bid to John Thune. Daschle has written a book on health care and was national co-chair of Barack Obama's presidential campaign.
