In 1957, the U.S. Army Chemical Corps conducted its first test as part of Operation LAC, a project designed to study the dispersion of biological or chemical agents in the atmosphere, by spraying particles of the fluorescent chemical zinc cadmium sulfide via C-119 over South Dakota and Minnesota.
