Oglala Lakota leader Red Cloud died on the Pine Ridge Reservation today in 1909. Red Cloud was considered an equal to Crazy Horse as a Sioux chief and was famous for his fight against European encroachment onto lands guaranteed the Indians through treaties, particularly the Black Hills. Red Cloud eventually invited Catholic priests to Pine Ridge to educate children. Some considered this progressive, while others saw it as treason.
