U.S. surveyor Charles H. Bates placed the last quartzite boundary marker on the spot where North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana converge today in 1892. The 360-mile-long North Dakota-South Dakota border has been called the most perfect and comprehensive boundary line in the United States. It is the only one marked along its entire length with quartzite monuments measuring 10 inches square and seven feet long, and weighing about 800 pounds.
