On This Day
Martha Jane Cannary-Burke, better known as Calamity Jane, died on this day in 1903. A frontierswoman and professional scout, Jane was a tough gal: she rode horses, shot guns, fought Indians, chewed tobacco and played poker and drank with the boys. She served with the Army, rode in the Wild West Show, lived in Deadwood during the gold rush and nursed many Deadwood residents back to health during a smallpox epidemic. She is buried at Mount Moriah next to Wild Bill Hickok.
