Dances With Wolves, a movie filmed almost entirely in western South Dakota, opened in theaters today in 1990. Starring Kevin Costner, it told the story of a soldier who travels Dakota Territory in the 1860s and befriends a Sioux tribe. The film won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
