Coe I. Crawford, South Dakota's sixth governor, died today in 1944 in Yankton. Crawford reformed state politics, earning the title of father of the Progressive movement. During his administration, the Legislature established a direct primary election, limited the influence of railroads and other corporations, required disclosure of campaign spending and restricted lobbyists.
