Archie M. Gubbrud, South Dakota's 22nd governor, died at his Lincoln County farm today in 1987. The Republican was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1950 and defeated incumbent Ralph Herseth for the governorship in 1960. Two years later, Gubbrud defeated Herseth again. In 1969 President Nixon appointed Gubbrud state director of the Farmers Home Administration, a position he held until 1977.
