Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery passed the mouth of the Big Sioux River on this date in 1804 and entered what would one day become South Dakota. They would struggle up river for nearly two months, reaching modern day North Dakota on October 15. Along the way they killed their first buffalo, encountered prairie dogs, visited Dakota, Lakota and Arikara villages, and at what is now Fort Pierre, had a hostile exchange that might have ended the expedition.
