Brothers George and Bill Piper founded the United Family Farmers at the former Byron School in Beadle County today in 1973. The group formed to oppose the Oahe Irrigation Project, which called for channeling and pumping Missouri River water to irrigate 190,000 acres of farmland in northeastern South Dakota. Opposition grew through the 1970s, and Congress terminated the project in 1982.
