Field Trip to the Stratobowl

South Dakota Magazine | Filed by Susan at 9:38 am

Stratobowl

Our story about the Stratobowl, which is featured in the Nov./Dec. issue of the magazine, has struck a chord with readers who lived in the area or remember the balloon flights. A balloon launching near Rapid City and landing in a field near White Lake or Kimball or Stickney – accounts of the actual landing spot differ – was big news in 1935.

If you enjoyed our Stratobowl story, you might also be interested in the current Adelstein Gallery exhibit in Rapid City's Journey Museum. The display features photographs, artifacts and text about the historic events surrounding the National Geographic's space exploration experiment.

Plus, the Journey is also planning a field trip to the Stratobowl site. The area is not usually open to the public, so this is a rare opportunity. Arley Fadness and Helen Wrede will be the hosts for the bus trip from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5. For more information, call the Journey at 394-6923.
