Garrison Keillor’s Great USD Adventure

Garrison Keillor, the humorist from Minnesota, will broadcast his Prairie Home Companion show live from USD in Vermillion on Saturday, April 29. If you want tickets, call 800-333-0789. Garrison has become more political and controversial in recent months. And some people I meet think his rural observations ring just a little tinny since he really doesn't live that life anymore for the most part. But I bet he draws a big and happy crowd. I think I'll go.
Word on the street is that he'll be doing a fundraiser for Rep. Stephanie Herseth while in Vermillion.

In 1997 and ‘98, when the news was filled with stories about Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky someone wrote the Prairie Home Companion website and asked Garrison Keillor why he never joked about the impeachment or blame the president for bringing shame to the office and the country. Keillor replied something to the effect, “It’s spring, there’s a smell of freshly overturned black dirt in the air.” He suggested we just take a walk and enjoy some peace and quiet.
I’ve been a PHC fan from the beginning. I’ve introduced many others to the program. I cried real tears when Garrison retired and rejoiced when he returned. Until a few years ago, I taped most of the shows and listened to them over and over. I’m a Norwegian Lutheran who laughs at jokes about both. And, I’ve responded with cash when MPR came calling.
But now, with a different administration in Washington, the formerly passive Garrison Keillor is in full attack mode..going so far as to call George Bush a war criminal that needs to be impeached. Things are different at the Fitzgerald house these days. We’re still invited to come over on Saturday nights, even asked to chip in for the entertainment, but then the host keeps ragging on the administration and anyone who doesn’t share his political views. You laugh at the jokes for awhile, but, the insults keep coming. Finally you get up to leave realizing you’re no longer welcome. So you high tail it outside where suddenly you get a whiff of freshly turned black dirt from someone’s garden and dream about the good old days.

For somebody nearing Social Security commentator number one is sure thin skinned about the C in C. At least Clinton’s dirt came from American soil.

For someone nearing Social Security age Commentator #1 is very thin skinned about the tattooing Kiellor gives the C in C.
At least Clinton’s dirt and playgrounds were of American soil.

Well, said Doug. I too have tired of Mr. Keillor’s constant bashing of the present administration. Plus, I am among those who continue to live the PHC life and his jokes just seem to ring a little empty when they are told from an “outsider.” Kind of like it is o.k. to make fun of other members of the family but don’t let anyone outside the family tell us cousin Joe is crazy.

I’m not a hugh PHC fan but I have actually appreciated Keillor’s comments regarding the administration. Maybe he didn’t criticize the previous administration but they have not done what this administration has done. That’s politics aside. In a society where it’s not socially acceptable or politically correct to criticize a “war leader,” I’ve found the comments refreshing, like fresh black dirt.

Glad to hear somebody else has a crazy cousin Joe!

Having the courage to call “the present administration” on their foolhardy and deadly ways is the best thing Keillor has done in his life! It transcends entertainment and comedy. He realized he had earned a few chips and he is cashing them in, even though it is costing him. Yes, I’m a Democrat but even Republicans with intelligence know that the “present administration” has lost touch with reality.

Seems to me if I remember correctly the previous administration was impeached. Only the second or third president to do a job so bad that he be impeached.
