The Bijou Hills in Brule County are a quiet place, but on this date in 1951 an unemployed laborer from Brookings named Robert Thwing kidnapped and raped a schoolteacher, and then murdered his uncle over a sum of money. Thwing was apprehended by police and at trial his lawyers attempted to argue Thwig was mentally unfit for punishment. The jury, however, failed to buy this argument and Thwing was sentenced to life behind bars in 1952. Twenty-two years later, Thwing's sentence was commuted and two years after that he was let out on bail. He died of cancer in 1984.
