On This Day
James "Scotty" Philip, the West River rancher who helped save the buffalo, was born today in 1858 in the highlands of Scotland. Philip emigrated to Kansas and eventually settled in Wyoming. After a brief stint mining gold in the Black Hills, Philip wandered from job to job before buying a small buffalo herd from Pete Dupree. Philip's herd grew to over 1,000 buffalo, the largest in the world, on his pasture north of Ft. Pierre. Following his death in 1911, Custer State Park purchased 36 head. The buffalo roaming the park today descend from Philip's herd.
