The Devil's Bathtub

Cleopatra Creek is among the dozens of rivulets that run through the valleys and gullies of the northern Black Hills and empty into Spearfish Creek as it races northward to Redwater Creek. The Cleopatra looks no different from any other creek. However, locals know it as the home to Devil’s Bathtub. Well off the beaten path, Devil’s Bathtub has attracted visitors for decades. Our family visited the Devil's bathtub in the late 1990s. It was a warm summer afternoon --even up in Spearfish Canyon-- and the cold water cascading down the slippery slope was a sharp, refreshing contrast to the air temperature. Recently I watched the video (VCR, of course) we shot while swimming in the landing pool that Mother Nature provided us. Great memory flashback in SD Magazine!
