The life cycle of a monarch is six to eight weeks, but those that hatch in South Dakota in August live an incredible six to eight months. When autumn arrives, they fly 2,500 miles to winter in the Oyamel fir forests in southern Mexico.

A lone paddle boarder skims Belle Fourche Reservoir just east of Belle Fourche. The reservoir, also known as Orman Dam, was created in 1911 for agricultural use and was the largest earthen dam of it’s time.
