April 13
A herd of 700 cattle from Hutchinson County farms and their handlers departed for Germany today in 1921. The cattle were gathered by German-Americans who wanted to ease the burden on Germany, forced into harsh reparations following World War I. Before the cows left, however, non-German protesters in Scotland fired into the herd, killing two and scattering dozens.
