American Indian activist and leader Russell Means was paroled on this day in 1979 after serving one year in the state penitentiary for his role in a riot outside the Sioux Falls courthouse. An American Indian Movement leader, Means participated in many of AIM's takeovers, including Wounded Knee in 1973. In 2002 he was fully pardoned for his actions at the courthouse.
