World War II flying ace Joe Foss received the Medal of Honor today in 1943 at the White House. After entering the Naval Aviation Cadet program, Foss was eager for combat, and he got his chance in the South Pacific. In his first dogfight in October 1942, Foss shot down a Japanese Zero and then was shot himself. He crash landed at Guadalcanal. Foss led a group of eight planes that became known as Foss's Flying Circus. By January 1943, the Flying Circus shot down 72 Japanese aircraft, with 26 credited to Foss.
