On This Day
Robert Carlson succeeded Paul Dudley as bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls today in 1995. Carlson, a Minnesota native, was an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis before coming to South Dakota. Here Carlson thrust himself into right to life issues. During Sen. Tom Daschle's re-election campaign in 2004, Carlson asked the pro-choice senator to stop referring to himself as a Catholic. Daschle denounced the Bishop but lost the race. That year Carlson left Sioux Falls to become bishop of the Diocese of Saginaw.
