Former USD writer-in-residence and 1954 National Book Award finalist Frederick Manfred was born today in 1912. Baptized Frederick Feikes Feikema VII, Manfred changed his name to be taken seriously by the eastern establishment. He grew up in northwestern Iowa, and lived for many years at a cabin in Blue Mound State Park in southwestern Minnesota. A prolific author, arguably his best work was 1954's "Lord Grizzly," a story about mountain man Hugh Glass who traveled across South Dakota with a broken leg. Manfred died in 1994.
