The South Dakota Board of Regents formally created The Shrine to Music Museum in Vermillion today in 1973. Arne Larson began collecting instruments while teaching music in Brookings. As Larson's cache grew, he began hearing from urban institutions wanting to house the museum. But he wanted his collection to stay in the region, and the Regents made the museum an academic unit of The University of South Dakota.
