Here are some of our favorite photos from the latest issue of the magazine. What are yours?
-
Bernie Hunhoff, editor-at-large, chose this photo by Jerry Grier. "I like the photo of Ingrid One Feather and her granddaughter Beau because it sure shows the sweetness of their relationship, and also I was there when Jerry Grier photographed the pair and I know it took a little cajoling to get them to agree to a picture."
-
Ruth Steil, administrative assistant, chose this photo from the documentary Rising Voices. "I love the colorful costumes and how engaged President Obama is with the children."
-
Roger Holtzmann, contributing editor, chose this photo of a burial after the Wounded Knee massacre. "'Favorite' might be an odd word to use in this case, but the photo of the mass grave is grimly, horribly captivating." The photo is from Larry Ness' collection.
-
Andrea Maibaum, production manager, chose this photo by Steve Fairburn. "Talk about perfect timing."
-
Jana Lane, subscriptions director, chose this photo by Bonny Fleming. "Bighorns have expressive eyes and this one seems to be staring intently. We see her but I wonder what she sees."
-
Paul Higbee, contributing editor, chose this photo by J.C.H. Grabill taken in August of 1890, four months before the Wounded Knee massacre. "I'm fascinated by the photograph. The range in facial expressions, the detail in dress, how subjects are positioned — they all invite questions. And of course, there's the great, haunting question: How many survived?"
-
Laura Johnson Andrews, avid knitter and assistant marketing director, chose this photo from Keystone by Bernie Hunhoff. "I like Abe's scarf. Glad to see West River has yarn bombers, too."
-
Renee Becker, subscriptions department, and John Andrews, managing editor, chose this aerial photo of the James River by Dave Tunge. "I like looking at aerial photos that give us different perspectives on geographic features," Andrews says.
-
Rebecca Johnson, special projects coordinator, chose this photo of the annual Thanksgiving celebration held by Middle Eastern immigrants in Sioux Falls. "I had so much fun writing this story and talking to the people who attend this annual tradition." Photo by Bill Goehring.
-
Heidi Marsh, co-publisher, chose this photo by Bernie Hunhoff. "I love the photo of Jerilyn Elk’s three-generation gift shop at the site of Wounded Knee. It’s a sweet way to welcome travelers to such a sad place."
