The Sinai Zoo
Sep 8, 2015
Nobody knows the exact location of the biblical Mount Sinai, but Sinai, South Dakota lies in the southwest corner of Brookings County near Lake Sinai, a deep little walleye lake. And just east of the town and the lake is the Post family farm. Or should we call it a zoo? Photos by Bernie Hunhoff.

Denny and Kerry Post and their three children have a menagerie among the corn and cattle, including a herd of 10 camels (led, above, by Denny and daughter Kayla.)
-
You can ride a camel, says Denny, but “they’re bumpier than a horse.” The Posts’ camels are dromedaries, meaning they have just one hump.
-
The Patagonian cavy is a big, long-eared member of the rodent family that hails from Argentina. But they get along just fine in South Dakota.
-
Comfortable as can be, an old German owl — also known as an owl pigeon — hangs out with other feathered friends on the Post farm.
-
A brilliant-plumaged blue and gold macaw has free range on the farm. Known as Abby, she can be a little prickly but she really likes Denny.
-
And why has Denny Post developed a zoo on the family farm? “Because I’m old enough that nobody can tell me ‘no,’” he says with a big smile. His dad had horses and his mother kept canaries and rabbits. Denny has just expanded from those roots.
