Our November/December issue includes a story about a German cookie with a twist. Bernie Hunhoff visited a meeting of the SoDak Stamm chapter of the Germans from Russian Heritage Society to learn about the recipe. Here are some of his photos that didn’t make the magazine.

Ammonia has been used as a baking ingredient in Germany and Scandinavia for centuries. It was once made from deer antlers and acted as a leavener.

The aroma generated by the baking cookies was very familiar to the livestock farmers in the audience. “When you get that smell in the chicken barn you clean it out,” one farmer joked.

We had a nice visit with people from Kaylor this last week.We were looking for someone who may have known Daniel Schmidt and wife Margaret (Schramm) Schmidt on our trip to decorate graves. The people at the packing house were all very friendly and a Highlight to our trip. A gentleman remembered our grandpa as a child going to school there. The house they lived in is gone now and if anyone has a picture of this house we would really appreciate a copy of it. Thank you so much and God Bless!!
