Spring Has Sprung

We received these spring photos from readers Sandy and Wayne Freeman.

The photos were taken last year near their home in the Coteau Hills area.

Sandy and Wayne were delighted to capture eleven painted turtles sunning themselves in a slough north of Fort Sisseton.

A ruby-throated hummingbird dines on nectar in a flower garden.

The ruby-throated hummingbird is the only hummingbird commonly found in the eastern half of South Dakota.

This fawn was spotted in an alfalfa field just west of the Freeman's home.

A Swainson's hawk tucks one foot into it's feathers for warmth. The Swainson's hawk's preference for prairie and scattered trees makes them more common in the western part of the state.
