South Dakota has fewer restaurants per square mile than perhaps any other state, but the distance between them only makes our hearts fonder and our appetites stronger. Bernie Hunhoff visited several of our quirky cafes and grills for a story in our January/February issue. Here are some of his photos that didn’t make the magazine.

Palm Garden Cafe closed for several decades before being reopened a few years ago with much of the original decor. The Aberdeen eatery's broasted chicken recipe dates back to 1932. -
Frank Day’s Bar in Dallas is a veritable museum of cowboy pictures and memorabilia, collected by the bar’s late namesake. -
Ten well-horned whitetails and four elk share the walls at Joe’s Cafe in Alexandria. -
Manolis, a quaint grocery store, tavern and sandwich shop in Huron, is known for great sandwiches. Try the Big Mike, a toasted bagel with ham, pepperjack and cream cheese. -
Brenda Carroll is the lean and mean proprietor of the Tumbleweed Cafe, the lone restaurant in Watauga.
