Tom Berry, known as the Cowboy Governor, was born today in 1877 in Nebraska. He arrived in South Dakota in 1897 and settled near Belvidere on a cattle ranch that he grew to 30,000 acres. After serving in the state legislature, Berry rode the 1932 Democratic landslide into the governor's office, where he served two terms. During his four years, Berry appointed 10 police officers to serve as the state's "Courtesy Patrol," which became the Highway Patrol. Berry unsuccessfully ran for national office and served as director of the Farm Credit Administration before retiring in Rapid City, where he died in 1951.
