Four-term governor and one-time congressman Bill Janklow was born today in 1939 in Chicago. After serving as attorney general, he became governor in 1978 and was easily reelected in 1982. Janklow served another two terms beginning in 1994. His administration's achievements include reinstating capital punishment and dropping state interest rates, which allowed Citibank to open a credit card center in Sioux Falls. In 2002, Janklow won the state's lone congressional seat but resigned two years later after he was convicted of manslaughter. Janklow died of brain cancer on Jan. 12, 2012.
