Flood waters from the raging Missouri River ate away a Nebraska peninsula, giving the land to South Dakota today in 1881. Residents of the island awoke to find the river jumped beds. Legal issues arose and the island became a haven for gambling, bootlegging and prostitution, earning it the name "Asymptote," meaning "not falling together." The boundary was officially changed in 1897.
