South Dakota Attorney General Mark Meierhenry sent an extradition request to the state of New York for the capture of American Indian Movement activist Dennis Banks today in 1983. Banks was wanted for his involvement in the 1973 Custer County courthouse riot. Banks sought refuge in California but fled to the Onondaga Indian Reservation in New York. Banks turned himself in two years later and served 18 months in the state penitentiary.
