South Dakota's first female pilot was born on this day in 1892 in Box Elder. Nellie Zabel Willhite took her first flight Nov. 13, 1927, and earned a living doing air shows, races, giving rides and carrying air mail, working as a commercial pilot until age 52. Willhite was a founding member of the Ninety-Nines, an organization of women aviators. She managed all this without being able to hear — Nellie became deaf at age 2 after a bout with the measles.
