Fifty mile per hour winds and heavy snowfall shut down eastern South Dakota today in 1940. The blizzard, reported in the next morning's Sioux Falls Argus Leader as an "oldtime blizzard," became known as the Armistice Day Blizzard because it forced cancellation of many holiday events. At least two South Dakotans were killed; Minnesota was hit hardest with at least 26 people killed. Temperatures dropped to 9-below in Lemmon and 4-below in Sioux Falls. Trains and buses were stalled and power lines were knocked out. Most of the state took a couple days to dig itself out of the wintry blast, which is still the standard-bearer for tales of "oldtime" blizzards.
